VPS Backup Strategies and Disaster Recovery Planning
Hardware fails. Software bugs corrupt data. Hackers breach systems. And human error—like accidentally running rm -rf /—is inevitable. If you run a VPS, data loss is not a matter of if, but when.
Implementing a robust backup and disaster recovery (DR) strategy is the most critical administrative task you must perform.
The 3-2-1 Backup Rule
The industry standard for data protection is the 3-2-1 rule. You should strive for:
- 3 Copies of your data (the primary production data and two backups).
- 2 Different storage media types (e.g., local disk and cloud object storage).
- 1 Copy located offsite (geographically separated from your VPS).
Types of VPS Backups
1. Provider-Level Snapshots
Most cloud VPS providers offer automated snapshots. A snapshot is a point-in-time image of your entire server, including the OS, configurations, and all data.
- Pros: Incredibly easy to restore. If a server upgrade breaks everything, you can click “Restore” and revert the entire server to how it was an hour ago.
- Cons: They are usually stored in the same data center as the VPS. If the data center burns down, you lose the server and the snapshots. They are also not granular; you usually can’t restore a single deleted file, only the whole disk.
2. File-Level Backups
This involves backing up specific directories, such as your web root (/var/www/html) and configuration files (/etc/nginx).
- Tools:
rsyncortarcombined with cron jobs. - Destination: You should push these files to external Object Storage (like Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, or DigitalOcean Spaces) using tools like

3. Database Backups
Never rely solely on file-level backups or snapshots for running databases. Backing up the raw data files of an active database can lead to corruption. You must create logical dumps.
- MySQL/MariaDB: Use
mysqldump.mysqldump -u root -p my_database > my_database_backup.sql - PostgreSQL: Use
pg_dump.pg_dump -U postgres my_database > my_database_backup.sql
Automate this process using a cron job, compress the .sql file, and ship it offsite alongside your file backups.
Disaster Recovery Planning
A backup is only a file. Disaster Recovery (DR) is the process of using those backups to bring your business back online.
A good DR plan answers these questions:
- RTO (Recovery Time Objective): How long can your application afford to be offline? (e.g., 1 hour, 24 hours).
- RPO (Recovery Point Objective): How much data can you afford to lose? (e.g., If you back up daily, your RPO is 24 hours of lost transactions).
- The Procedure: Do you have written, step-by-step instructions on how to provision a new server, install the required software, pull down the backups, and restore the database?
Testing Your Backups
A backup that has never been tested is not a backup; it’s a wish.
You must periodically perform a “fire drill.” Provision a temporary, cheap VPS. Try to deploy your application solely using your offsite backups and your DR documentation. If the application fails to start, your backup strategy is flawed and needs adjustment before a real disaster strikes.
